Katy Perry Praises Beyonce In Elle

Monday, March 14th, 2011

‘I think diva is a great and powerful word in the sense of what Beyoncé makes it,’ the pop star says in the magazine’s cover story.

Katy Perry not only glams up for the new issue of Elle, but she also gets real. The singer — who is gearing up for a big performance on this Sunday’s Grammy Awards — dishes on diva behavior, discusses her personal life and even reveals how much she weighs in the fashion magazine’s latest cover story.

“I feel like I’m at a point in my life right now where I could potentially stick around,” Perry says about her outlook on being a pop star. “I don’t feel like a diva, but I think diva is a great and powerful word in the sense of what Beyoncé makes it. And maybe I can’t be Beyoncé, but maybe I can be Cyndi Lauper. I mean be like her, not be her. That would just be weird.”

The singer also admits to having some ambitions outside of the entertainment world. “I think some people will die on the stage, and I’m not so sure I want to do that. Like, I want to have kids!” she explains. “I’m totally fine with saying that. I think some people are scared because they’re worried it’s going to ruin their career, but I want to live a full life.”

That full life, these days, includes her hubby, Russell Brand, who she says is her perfect better half. “Everything clicked really fast. We kind of instantly got past all the surfacey stuff. And ever since then, there hasn’t been a dull moment,” she says. “We both needed balance, and we give that to each other. It wasn’t about me taming him, which is what everyone always says — it was about timing.”

Perry doesn’t hold back at all, revealing details about her weight that very few celebrities seem willing to share with the world. “I was shaped like a square at one time. I was! I’m generally around 130 pounds, which is totally fine for me,” she confesses. “But when I was a kid, I was the same height and weighed more like 145. And I had enormous boobs that I didn’t know what to do with, so I wore minimizers, which were not cute. Those thick-ass straps! I got made fun of for the over-the-shoulder boulder holder … and all I wanted was to look like Kate Moss. Little did I know … that these things would come in handy someday.”

New ‘Super 8′ Trailer’s Five Key Moments

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

We take a look at the most fascinating scenes featured in the new promo clip for the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed adventure film.
By Eric Ditzian

“What the hell?” says a boy at the very end of the first full-length trailer for “Super 8,” neatly summarizing our own thoughts about the footage from the mysterious action-adventure film: Um, what exactly did we just see?

Well, what we saw, first off, was an incredibly effective promo clip courtesy of director J.J. Abrams and executive producer Steven Spielberg. It managed to maintain the spirit of a teaser trailer — withholding far more information than is ever unleashed — while expanding our understanding of, and getting us seriously more excited about, what we’ll see in the flick when it hits theaters on June 10. Here are our picks for the new trailer’s five key moments:

What Kind of Military Trucks Are Those?
In we’d already seen the fiery train crash that unleashes some sort of very angry, possible very alien creature. So what we’re focused on here is what’s new, like those military trucks rolling through town with red cargo bins. What kind of military vehicles haul cargo like that? We see them pull right up to the train’s wreckage, so we’re guessing whatever is in them is important. As an Air Force leader, played by Noah Emmerich, says to Kyle Chandler’s local policeman, “I understand you have concerns about our cargo,” before telling him there’s nothing to worry about. Right …

9/11 … for Dogs?
Though the film is set in 1979, there’s no mistaking the allusion to September 11, 2001, in this shot of missing-dog posters. Apparently, all the dogs hightailed it out of town after the train crash. Why is it that animals always seem to grasp potential sci-fi terror before humans? And what ever happened to man’s best friend, after all?

That Looks Like It Hurts
So dogs and people start to go missing. Things, no doubt, start to go from bad to worse. Just look at this bloody-faced guy who has a gun in his hand, a terrified look in his eyes, and one word of instruction: “Go!” This raises a question about “Super 8″ that we’ve had for a while. Early reports seemed to suggest that this movie would be more of an alien-invasion film in the vein of “Cloverfield.” But most of the footage we’ve seen thus far gives an impression of something more akin to “E.T.” So which is it? Or is it both? In the new trailer, we definitely get a sense of a Spielberg-like focus on family-oriented fare, yet things clearly get very intense and very dangerous at some point.

Boom! Boom!
Throughout the trailer, we’ve seen how this alien presence can somehow manipulate electricity and exert a telekinetic power on objects. Here we see a prime example of that ability, as the local electronics store goes boom. At others points, power lines explode, a bus tips over, and, well, it’s all leading to…

Look, Up in the Sky
The most eye-popping scene in the entire trailer comes at nearly the very end. Main Street is trashed, the citizenry is freaked out and the military is nowhere to be seen as vehicles rise up into the air. The kids (portrayed by Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning) — both looking very much like characters from “E.T.,” he Elliot, she Gertie — take in the craziness. Like in “E.T.,” it seems that only the children fully understand the implications of what’s actually going on. For example: No one believes a man in the hospital, for instance, who claims to have seen the creature … except the boy. As he tells the man, “I believe you.”

Exclusive: Ke$ha Talks Writing Britney Spears’ ‘Till The World Ends’

‘It’s an honor to write for one of pop music’s biggest icons,’ she tells MTV News.

Britney Spears’ new single, “Till the World Ends” is dance-floor ready — just ask Ke$ha. The pop star in her own right wrote the just-released track, which was produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin.

“I consider myself a songwriter before and above everything else, so it’s an honor to write for one of pop music’s biggest icons. And I hope it gets everyone’s ass on the dance floor cuz y’all know that’s what K-Monay does best!” the singer said in an exclusive statement to MTV News.

The single was posted by Perez Hilton on Thursday afternoon (March 3), after speculation earlier in the day that it would hit radio next week.

“Till the World Ends” is a swirling, “beat the beat” track, ready for late nights spent “dancing till the world ends” as she sings on the fast-paced party jam. “This kitten got your tongue tied in knots I see/ Spit it out ’cause I’m dying for company,” a confident Spears purrs.

Later in the song, she sings: “See the sunlight/ We ain’t stopping/ Keep on dancing till the world ends/ If you feel it/ Let it happen/ Keep on dancing till the world ends.”

Last month, Ke$ha talked with Spin.com about the song, saying it’s about the power of an artist performing a great gig. “That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world,” she said. “You know, when you go out, and you’re having an amazing, magical night and you don’t want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends.”

This new track is the latest single from Spears’ forthcoming Femme Fatale, which drops March 29.

Ke$ha’s ‘Blow’ Director Addresses Lady Gaga ‘Unicorn’ Flap

Unicorn cameos in ‘Born This Way’ and ‘Blow’ videos is ‘just weird coincidence,’ Chris Marrs Piliero tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

The brand-new videos for Ke$ha’s “Blow” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” couldn’t be more different. But fans on the Web have been comparing the clips, thanks to a special cameo the two videos have in common. With unicorns appearing in both “Blow” and “BTW,” some Gaga fans are accusing the K-Dollar of stealing from their Mother Monster.

But MTV News spoke to “Blow” director Chris Marrs Piliero, who explained that it’s pure coincidence his video and the Nick Knight-directed video both feature unicorns.

“It’s very odd. It’s one of those weird things, and I think a lot of people on the Internet don’t grasp the sense of time [that goes into making videos]. Some Gaga fans, they don’t realize that just because it was announced there might be a unicorn [in Gaga's video], it’s like, we didn’t film the video after that announcement,” he said.

“It’s like [the movies] ‘Dante’s Peak’ and ‘Volcano’ and then there was ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Deep Impact.’ I don’t know, I know when things like that happen when I was a part of the audience, I was like, ‘That’s weird and fishy,’ but now being on the other side, it’s just weird coincidences,” he explained. “What are the odds of that?”

In fact, Piliero had a gut feeling that he should use unicorns many, many moons ago and he thought Ke$ha was the right artist to join with the mythological creatures onscreen.

“Ke$ha was looking to make kind of something different, a video that was cool and random, and I had this idea running in my head with just the idea of unicorns,” he recalled. “If I massacred unicorns, they could bleed rainbows. I’m a fan of violence and I’m always trying to find a way to make it OK.”

The rainbow-spewing unicorns weren’t the only cameo that Piliero hoped to nab. He also wanted “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek to appear in the clip. “He’s such an awesome guy. He was down for it,” he said. “He had seen the Black Keys video [I shot] and he was stoked on the idea. It was so much fun. He and Ke$ha kind of went for all the craziness. I think he has a fantastic comic side. He’s good at being naturally funny. It’s about the delivery.”

Ke$ha, of course, was onboard for all the zaniness. “Before we started filming, we had quite a few talks. She was adamant you can’t back away from the crazy; everything about the idea she loved and she enforced the fact that she wanted to embrace every aspect of it and really go for it,” he recalled. “On set, she was having fun. She was like, ‘I want to lick a unicorn.’ It was rad working with her because there definitely wasn’t a sense of her feeling awkward about stuff or detached; no ego. It felt like we had worked together before.”

Dave Grohl Spreads The Gospel Of Rock

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

MTV News spent the day with the Foo Fighters frontman and realized he’s on a mission … from Freddie Mercury.
By James Montgomery

Interviewing the Foo Fighters on Thursday night
Photo: Jonathan Mussman / MTV News

Dave Grohl is sprawled out on a couch inside his trailer, flipping through photos on his Blackberry, largely ignoring everything happening around him (a list of potential distractions that, at this moment, includes “Pat Smear getting makeup applied to his face,” “Nate Mendel sitting next to a plate of vegetables,” and “Taylor Hawkins shouting about Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ “) when all of a sudden, he stops, looks up at me and thrusts his phone in my face.

“Look at this, man, let me show you something,” he says, presenting me with a photo of him shaking hands with President Barack Obama. “Don’t f— this up.”

He is only kidding, in that faux-serious way that he is better than pretty much anyone (or at least anyone who used to be in Nirvana) at trying to psyche me out minutes before we go live on MTV for the premiere of the Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video. So, I make a joke about how he was really slumming it with me, at which point he quickly pulls the device back to his chest, finds another picture and shows it to me.

“Don’t be like that,” he scolds. “Be like this.

It’s a photo of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, decked out all in white, addressing the masses during the band’s legendary 1985 Live Aid performance, a photo that captures everything that was great and majestic about not only the band, but rock and roll in general. And in showing it to me, not only does Dave Grohl confirm the fact that he is a terrifyingly huge Queen fan (the kind that carries photos of Mercury on his Blackberry), but he also reveals what may very well be his guiding principle: Believe in nothing less than the life-affirming power of rock.

It’s an outlook that has led him to share the stage with Jimmy Page and record albums with Lemmy Kilmister, an enthusiasm that belies the fact that he is 42 years old and has been playing in bands for nearly 30 of those years. And above all else, it is why — despite being (at the very least) a key cog or (at the very most) the driving force behind two of the biggest rock acts of the past 20 years — he is not above messing around with a guy like me, or keeping pictures of Freddy Mercury on his phone. He is, first and foremost, a rock-obsessed super-fan, a true believer. In other words, he is not all that different from you or me. Only with better connections.

But what makes Grohl different is that he uses those connections to spread the gospel. It’s why he decided to record the Foos’ new album, Wasting Light in his own garage, why he recruited Bob Mould (of Grohl’s all-time favorite acts, Husker Du) to sing on the song “Dear Rosemary,” and why he reunited with former Nirvana mate Krist Novoselic on the stunning “I Should Have Known.” It’s what any of us would’ve done if we were in his shoes: make the record of our dreams, our way, with our heroes and friends. On one hand, it’s a selfish move, on the other, it’s selfless … dutiful even. Rock has been good to Dave Grohl, and so now he will be good to it, by honoring — and harnessing — its powers for good.

And all of that may seem like utter nonsense, but take one look at Grohl any time he’s onstage — the goofy smile, the wild eyes, the genuine sense of abandon he displays — and try to tell me he’s not being sincere. Or, better yet, watch him interact with his fans, like I did on Thursday in Northridge, California, at the home of Shivan Somaratne, the Foo Fighters fanatic who was chosen by MTV to host the premiere of “Rope.” Grohl truly was in his element, cracking jokes, posing for pictures, signing albums and T-shirts and even a chest or two. He was genuinely touched when Somaratne told him that the first song he ever learned to play on guitar was the Foo’s “Everlong” — though he was quick to laugh, “Well, it’s a simple song” — and seemed grateful when Somaratne handed him a demo CD he had just recorded with his band. You got the feeling he was even going to listen to it.

This was a man who put himself on the same level as the kids in a California suburb, despite 20 years of evidence to the contrary. A man who showed up to the premiere of his new video wearing the same clothes he wore in the video. A man who purchased, customized and fully stocked a white limousine, for no real reason other than it’s sort of an awesome thing to do. In other words, this was Dave Grohl doing what he does best: living as the embodiment of rock’s true power, and by doing so, encouraging others to do the same thing.

It’s what makes him so likable and humble, and what separates him from 95 percent of other rock stars in his strata. He does not take himself seriously in the very least but he takes rock and roll incredibly seriously.

Which is probably why, minutes before we went live, he grabbed me, looked me square in my eyes and said, “Don’t be nervous.” Or why, after we had made it through the premiere, he smiled and said, simply, “You didn’t f— it up.” And he wasn’t joking this time. He is perhaps rock’s purest ambassador, a man on a mission to spread the good word (or at least buy some Queen albums). On some level, Dave Grohl wants us all to be rock stars.

Foo Fighters Fans Are ‘People Who Dig Rock Music,’ Dave Grohl Says

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

‘There’s not one particular demographic,’ he tells MTV News during their ‘MTV First’ premiere of ‘Rope.’
By Vaughn Schoonmaker, with reporting by James Montgomery

The Foo Fighters came to one lucky fan’s house Thursday for “MTV First,” where they premiered their “Rope” video and answered questions submitted on Twitter and in person.

When MTV News’ James Montgomery asked the band about their fanbase, lead singer Dave Grohl described the diversity of those who fill up stadiums when the band is on tour.

“There’s not one particular demographic. It’s just people who dig rock music,” Dave noted. “When we play gigs, it’s a trip to stand there and look at the audience, because there’ll be kids, like 5- or 6-year-old kids, and then there’ll be like full-on mustache dads. And then there’ll be like crazy MILF drunk mamas.”

The Foo Fighters certainly treasure their fans, both new and vintage. “We still get new fans and then we still have some that saw Nirvana. So to me it’s really awesome, because we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for our fans.”

As far as what the average Foo Fighters fan may be like, there’s certainly a lack of paparazzi stampedes and screaming teenagers.

“I think we have a cool relationship with [our fans],” Dave smiled. “Like when people see us, they don’t go, ‘Oh my God! It’s the Foos!’ They’ll just be like, ‘Hey, Dave, what’s up?’ and I’m like, ‘Do I know that guy?’ So I never say, ‘It’s nice to meet you.’ I always say, ‘It’s nice to see you.’ ”

Dave also spoke of his recent discovery of a vast and enthusiastic population of Foos fans in South America, when he joined Twitter.

“One of the first things I noticed when I first tweeted is that like 98 percent of the people on Twitter live in Argentina and Brazil,” Dave said. “I [tweeted] a picture of the tape machines, and 50 percent of the responses were like, ‘Come to Argentina!’ ‘Come to Brazil!’ ‘Come to Chile!’ ”

The South American fans have already made quite an impression on the Foo Fighters. As Dave recalled, “We had this one knob on the mixing deck that we made the ‘grunge’ knob, so we turned it up to 11 and took a picture of it, and someone from Argentina wrote, ‘Never too grungy!’ And so that became this catchphrase that we use.”

Do you count yourself among the Foo Fighters’ eclectic fanbase? Let us know in the comments!

Last week, shortly after the haircut heard ’round the world, Justin Bieber gave a lock of his famous hair to Ellen DeGeneres. The talk-show host graciously took the gift and promised to auction if off and give all the proceeds to charity.

In addition to the lock of hair, Bieber also signed a plastic box in which the hair would be kept. On Wednesday (March 2), 98 bids later, the Bieber memorabilia had sold for $40,668. All the proceeds from the hair will go to the Gentle Barn Foundation, a California-based animal-rights organization.

When Bieber appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to give the talk-show host the hair, he reassured her that it was, in fact, his. “Yes, it’s really my hair, but there’s a perk: I wanted to do something good. I’m giving pieces of it to different people,” he explained during the February 23 appearance. “The thing is, we’re doing something special. We want you to donate it to whatever charity you want.”

He also joked about what inspired him to cut off his signature locks. “I was inspired by yours,” Bieber laughed. “Yeah [people were freaking out], but I was like, ‘I don’t really care.’ ”

Perez Hilton was also one of the lucky hair recipients. On February 22, the blogger wrote, “Not only did Justin Bieber get a haircut, but the teen phenom tells us that he is going to be divvying up his shorn locks to help raise money for different charities. And, he’s giving Perez some of his hair to auction off! We’re working it all out now, and we can’t wait to tell you what good we hope to do with Bieber’s hair!”

What do you think of the final price for Justin’s hair? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga Says No Duets On Born This Way

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

‘I want to stand on my own two feet,’ Gaga says.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Lady Gaga’s 2009 smash The Fame Monster, the eccentric star hooked up with one of the fiercest ladies in the game when she and Beyoncé got their party on for the club anthem “Telephone.” The singers then appeared together in an over-the-top music video in which they played a Quentin Tarantino-esque version of Thelma and Louise.

As the May 23 release date of Gaga’s latest musical opus Born This Way draws near, the singer’s little monsters are wondering if the star has secured any A-list talent for a collaboration on the new album.

In a recent radio chat, Gaga revealed that she’s not planning on having anyone guest on Born This Way, according to Digital Spy. “I want to stand on my own two feet. I’ve already collaborated with my favorite female in the business,” she teased. “We’ll see how I’m feeling when I’m wrapping up the album.”

With the anticipation for the record so high, fans are beginning to piece together the puzzle of BTW. Reported lyrics for her second single, “Judas,” have already hit the Internet. On the track, Gaga waxes poetic about a lover whom she loves more than he loves her.

“Judas/ You never ever never/ Ever really ever loved me more, than I/ But Nemesis is watching over-high,” she reportedly sings. “And this is your time/ Judas, lie on lie, write/ Tears drop ’cause I cry/ The echo truth killed you so you may finally die.”

Lyrics for another BTW track, “Government Hooker,” also reportedly found their way onto the Internet. A remix of the song debuted last week at the Thierry Mugler fashion show in Paris.

On the song, Gaga sings, “We had our night/ Our real nature/ No more time to decide/ Let it climb, let it ignite/ I can be cool/ I can be anything/ I’ll be your everything/ Just touch me baby.”

‘Super 8′ Trailer Reveals ‘Close Encounter’ With Characters

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

The full-length trailer introduces the children and police chief at the heart of J.J. Abrams upcoming alien flick.
By Terri Schwartz

Though the title “Super 8″ might reference an old school video camera, the first full-length trailer for the film, which was posted on the movie’s Twitter feed early Friday morning (March 11), finally shows us that J.J. Abrams’ latest is going to be about much more than just a mysterious event accidentally caught on film.

Plot details have been scarce since “Super 8″ was first announced, but the latest full-length trailer shows that Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg are ready to give us some context for the film. If the teaser trailer and Super Bowl ad were all about the mysterious story, this latest look at the flick is about introducing us to the characters.

Enter the young children at the center of the film, led by newcomer Joel Courtney. The sparse plot details previously released about “Super 8″ told us that the movie would follow these kids after they accidentally capture footage on their Super 8 camera of a mysterious “something” escaping a train crash. The new trailer sets this up pretty blatantly, but with a larger look at the setting for the film.

In addition to Courtney, Elle Fanning is introduced in the trailer as the object of the young boy’s affections, and “Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler is shown as Courtney’s concerned father, who doesn’t want him to hang around too much with his young filmmaking friends as they make a zombie movie. Turns out Chandler also is the police chief in town, and when whatever was in the train escapes, he is the one forced to deal with it as he gradually realizes that the government is hiding something from all of them.

Comparisons have already been drawn between “Super 8″ and “E.T.,” “War of the Worlds” and “The Goonies,” but this trailer hearkens back mostly to Spielberg’s 1977 classic, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” In the same way that the “Close Encounters” aliens were something to be revered and not despised, the “Super 8″ creature could possibly be more magical than evil — then again, how to explain all the missing dogs?

Abrams has proven with his previous projects like “Cloverfield” and “Lost” that he is the master of creating five questions by answering one, and the same can be said about this latest, more plot-driven sneak peek. The second half of the trailer raises about a million more questions about the plot of the film. What exactly was released during the train crash? Why is it having a strange effect on the townspeople? And is it really as dangerous as the government would lead the characters to believe?

Unfortunately, we have to wait until June 10 to find out.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Super 8.”

Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

Friday, March 11th, 2011

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

Ke$ha
Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “OMG” and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year’s biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn’t heard “Dynamite” or “In My Head”?

The love went both ways, with dance music’s biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year’s VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

“You definitely saw tempos go up this year,” Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. “And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now.”

“I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower,” said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. “I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment.”

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: “I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there.”

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

“I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it,” said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. “He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile ‘unst-unst.’ But it’s just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent.”

“You have someone like will.i.am, who’s like, ‘Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,’ and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music,” Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. “R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year.”

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: “It’s actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that’s gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z’s thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience.”

“I think it’s caught on this year because the people who’ve done it have been successful,” offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. “Like ‘OMG,’ with usher, he didn’t have success until he made a dance record. He had ‘There Goes My Baby’ and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn’t really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, ‘OK, let me just try this out.’ It’s like Auto-Tune. Like, ‘Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.’ They end up liking it and doing more of it.”

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

“I do think it’s a blip,” Caramanica said. “I don’t think that’s gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we’ll all look back on and go, ‘Wasn’t that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?”

“At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, ‘Let me go back to my soul background,’ ” Hope said. “When you actually have to say something, dance doesn’t really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it’s kind of a fad.”

“I think music is very cyclical,” Eng offered. “So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I’m sure it will phase out at some point.”

Wilson called dance music “the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer.”

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Just Latest Celebrity/Paparazzi Encounter

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Big-name stars like Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Britney Spears have also had tense run-ins with photographers.

For many celebrities, their relationship with the prying lens of the paparazzi has always been love/hate. Some bask in the attention and others complain of being hounded relentlessly by hungry photographers. This week, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were caught up in a paparazzi kerfuffle while celebrating the Biebs’ 17th birthday in Los Angeles.

After giving the paps the finger during the encounter, Bieber later apologized via Twitter. But he’s only the latest in a long history of celebrity/celebrity-photographer encounters: Everyone from Lily Allen to Coldplay’s Chris Martin to Sean Penn (the king of paparazzi knockdowns) has had heated moments with the paps. Here, we look back at some of the more memorable run-ins.

Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz
Like Bieber and Gomez, then-couple Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz were involved in a scuffle with the paps in 2006. Diaz claimed a photographer tried to run her over, while the photographer claimed the actors had trapped him as he was trying to get away.

Björk in Bangkok
Björk lashed out a photographer at Bangkok airport in 1996, attacking a female photog who was trying to take pictures of her as she made her way through the airport. Things quickly got physical. The singer also attacked a paparazzo in 2008 in New Zealand, also at an airport, ripping his shirt.

Britney Spears and an Umbrella
During a more trying time in Britney Spears’ life, the singer, who had recently shaved her head, attacked a paparazzo’s SUV as a pack of photographers looked on. Using an umbrella to carry out the attack, it was believed that Britney was feeling the pressure of the prying paparazzi lens when she wailed on that car in 2007.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry
In 2010, Russell Brand attacked several paparazzi while he and his soon-to-be-wife Katy Perry made their way through LAX. Brand was convinced the photogs were tying to sneak inappropriate pics of Perry.

Kanye West and the Bodyguard
Kanye also had a moment with paps at an airport. West and his bodyguard Don Crowley got into a physical altercation with a photographer in 2008 at LAX. Both he and Crowley were accused of ruining camera equipment after a photog attempted to take the rapper’s photo.

Charlie Sheen’s Home Searched By Police

Officers removed antique rifle and bullets after receiving tip actor was in possession of weapons.

Los Angeles Police Department officers paid yet another visit to troubled actor Charlie Sheen’s home on Thursday evening as part of an investigation into a suspected violation of the temporary restraining order connected to the former “Two and a Half Men” star’s ex-wife, Brooke Mueller.

Based on a tip that Sheen was in possession of weapons and ammunition, police searched the home for three hours but did not arrest Sheen after carting away an antique rifle from the 1800s and some bullets, according to TMZ. The police visit reportedly came after cops received a tip earlier in the day that Sheen had threatened to harm himself with a firearm; the actor is prohibited from possessing weapons as part of the restraining order.

An LAPD spokeswoman told Us magazine, “We were there to investigate the possible violation of a restraining order. It came to our attention that Mr. Charlie Sheen is a registered owner of firearms so we were making sure there were no firearms or ammunition in the home.” Spokeswoman Norma Eisenman would not discuss whether any firearms were found in the home and said Sheen cooperated with police.

As the raid was under way, news helicopters broadcast footage of Sheen — who filed a $100 million lawsuit against his former “Men” bosses earlier in the day — calmly eating his dinner in his backyard. He later tweeted, “All good here on homefront. All reports are false. I’ll explain more very soon.” He later added, “The LAPD were AWESOME. Absolute pros! They can protect and serve this Warlock anytime!”

Just before the police action, Sheen revealed some news to his followers, confirming that he will be launching a Conan O’Brien-style road show in the near future entitled My Violent Torpedo of Truth/ Defeat Is Not an Option Show.

The first two confirmed dates for the outing are April 2 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit and April 3 at the Chicago Theatre in Chicago. Tickets for the shows go on sale Saturday, but at press time Sheen had not announced the lineup of performers for the events.

The promotional description of the show reads like one of Sheen’s many recent online rants. “I’m going on the road. LIVE. Will there be surprises? Will there be guests? Will there be mayhem? Will you ask questions? Will you laugh? Will you scream? Will you know the truth? WILL THERE BE MORE?!?! This IS where you will hear the REAL story from the Warlock. Bring it. I dare you to keep up with me.”

‘Jane Eyre’ Stars Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender Find Love Comes Easily

Stars bring Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of timeless tale to the big screen.
By Josh Wigler

There is no Bella without Edward, no Sookie without Bill, and there is certainly no Jane without Rochester.

In “Jane Eyre,” the classic literary tale penned by English novelist and poet Charlotte Brontë, readers are thrust into a timeless tale chronicling the turbulent romance between Edward Rochester, the master of Thornfield Hall, and the titular Jane, his governess. The relationship between Jane and Rochester is a brutally complicated affair filled with astonishing lies and undeniable passion at every turn. It’s a rollercoaster ride, to say the least, and moviegoers better be ready to strap in tight when director Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of the 1847 novel arrives in theaters Friday (March 11).

Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender have the great honor — and the extraordinary challenge — of bringing these characters to life, as Jane and Rochester respectively, but as they explained to MTV News at the New York City premiere earlier this week, their real-life relationship is nowhere near as dramatically complex.

“We got on really well from the beginning, so it was kind of easy to go from there,” Wasikowska said. “The most important thing when you have a relationship that has to be that intense in a film, it’s 90 percent being able to get along well and have fun, and I really think we did. We were able to channel that energy into the intensity of the scenes.”

It wasn’t just their personal chemistry that led the way to a successful dynamic as Rochester and Jane, according to Fassbender. The up-and-coming British actor, who counts the hotly anticipated “X-Men: First Class” and “Prometheus” as two of his highest-profile projects on the board, said that Wasikowska’s inherent gifts as an actress made the relationship work.

“She’s so talented,” he enthused. “She just sort of gets down into the work. She’s so disciplined, practical, straight-forward and easy to work with that you just start riffing and it’s like playing music. You either sing well together or you don’t.”

And these two sing so well together that they didn’t need to spend any time engaging in team-building exercises to develop their characters’ tumultuous relationship.

“We didn’t do any exercises, like, ‘I am a rabbit, and you are a … horse,’ ” Fassbender explained, laughing. “Maybe that’s something to use in the future,” he managed between laughs. “There’s a joke in there somewhere. I have to bring my rabbit to some project!”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Jane Eyre.”

What do you think about the latest Britney song? Let us know in the comments!

Beyonce, Leonardo DiCaprio Lead Flurry Of Movie Remakes

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Russell Brand, Willow Smith, Jonah Hill are just a few stars looking to revamp film and TV classics like ‘Arthur’, ‘Annie’ and ’21 Jump Street.’

What do Willow Smith and Beyoncé have in common with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and Kenny Wormald? They’re all starring (or in talks to star) in the latest round of remakes of beloved films and TV shows coming down the pike.

On Thursday, news broke that Beyoncé would be starring in a Clint Eastwood-directed remake of the 1976 Barbra Streisand classic “A Star Is Born” (which was a remake of a 1954 movie that remade a 1937 film). In the meantime, Will Smith is reportedly petitioning Sony to remake “Annie” (the 1982 movie and 1977 musical) starring his 10-year-old daughter, Willow, best known for whipping her hair.

In October it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio and best bud Tobey Maguire would be starring in Baz Luhrmann’s 3-D retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby,” with Carey Mulligan joining as Daisy Buchanan.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have been working on bringing the ’80s Johnny Depp-starring television series “21 Jump Street” to the big screen since 2008, and they might even get Depp to cameo in it in time for the film’s March 16, 2012, release date.

And let’s not forget the long hunt for a Ren McCormack (the character Kevin Bacon made famous in 1984), after Zac Efron and Chace Crawford dropped out of the planned “Footloose” remake that finally landed dancer Kenny Wormald the role of his life.

Then there’s “Arthur,” the Russell Brand-starring remake of the 1981 screwball comedy about a happily drunk millionaire who risks everything for love. The film has tapped everyone from Helen Mirren to Greta Gerwig and Nick Nolte.

Two recently announced remakes are “Lethal Weapon” and “The Wizard of Oz,” which are still in early development and without stars attached. Warner Bros. announced their plans to reboot the Mel Gibson-starring franchise on Thursday and tapped writer Will Beall to pen the script with completely new characters. And director Robert Zemeckis announced back in November that he planned on remaking the 1939 Technicolor classic using the script from the original film, with Warner Bros. hoping Robert Downey Jr. will play Oz.

Just this past year, films from “Clash of the Titans” to “The Karate Kid” to “A Nightmare on Elm Street” were remade for the big screen and were well-received by audiences. “Alice in Wonderland” and “Clash of the Titans” went on to become two of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2010, while “Piranha 3D” and “The A-Team” also went on to strong successes, proving that there definitely is a market for these kinds of remakes.

Deadmau5 Brings Dance Music To The ‘Masses,’ Wolfgang Gartner Says

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

‘He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,’ producer/DJ tells MTV News of his collaborator.
By Adam Stewart

It’s no secret that 2010 was a pivotal year for electronic dance music here in the States. With deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia becoming household names, the genre’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Using a conduit of collaboration, artists such as deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) have paired up with various underground acts to further the rapid expansion of the genre.

Perhaps one of the most notable movers and shakers of the year is now-Grammy-Award-nominated producer and DJ Wolfgang Gartner, who recently sat down to chat with MTV News about deadmau5 and dance music’s rise to the top.

“He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,” Gartner says, “but there have been certain artists that have been instrumental in helping it cross over and reach the mainstream — which I think is a good thing. I think rap artists using dance beats is a great thing. I think it just brings more people towards this music that we all love.”

Thanks to several key moments, such as deadmau5 taking the helm as house DJ (well, technically “House Artist”) for the 2010 VMAs, dance music has been thrown into the forefront of America’s youth, a key demographic for any genre.

“Everybody knows who he is now and he’s kind of exposing the masses to dance music. These little five-, six- and seven-year-old kids latch on to this ‘mau5head’ logo — they get into the music and he’s bringing this tiny young generation into this music that probably wouldn’t be exposed to it.”

Gartner certainly doesn’t mind the exposure either. Unless you were living under a rock for the past six months, you probably heard one of this past summer’s hottest anthems, “Animal Rights,” a collaborative effort brought forth by deadmau5 and Gartner.

“It was interesting because I kind of had a preconceived notion about how he would be to work [with],” said Gartner. “I think our sounds are really similar, so I figured he would work in a similar way to me, but the way that he writes music is actually completely different to me. But he achieves kind of the same sound through a completely different process.”

Recorded in deadmau5′s favorite Los Angeles studio — that would be rocker Tommy Lee’s House — “Animal Rights” is a thumping progressive house anthem that melds Wolfgang’s unmistakable harmonics and funk riffs with the driving bass line and wobbly synths that make deadmau5 one of the unique forces in the dance music world.

“[Deadmau5] writes these rich complex chord progressions and he does it by drawing these little bars on a grid, which is just amazing that you can do that and get that result,” Gartner goes on to say. “It just proves you don’t have to be able to play keyboards to write amazing music.”

The two sound pioneers never cease to stop pushing the limits on what they are able to produce. Using drastically difference production approaches, deadmau5 and Gartner had the ability to play off each other’s strengths while recording the track.

“I’d say the biggest thing is that I play everything in on a keyboard, like even my drums,” says Gartner. “I play everything in live and he draws it in with notes on a mouse, which blew me away because his music is very musical.”

What do you think 2011 will hold for deadmau5 and Gartner? Let us know in the comments below!

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.
By Jocelyn Vena

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

“My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I’d never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people,” he recalled.

“And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, ‘Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?’ The politest possible way he could say no, he did. … I took the hint. I didn’t get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session.”

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. “He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, ‘I should have let this kid sing,’ and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me.”

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

“As far as Usher being my mentor, he’s definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life.”

On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

Usher Says New ‘Rev Pop’ Project Is A ‘Movement’

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like ‘Yeah!’ and ‘OMG.’
By James Montgomery

Usher
Photo: MTV News

With the success of songs like “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” “Hot Tottie” and “OMG,” Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he’s looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a “movement.”

It’s something he’s calling “Rev Pop” — or, simply, “Rev” — and though he’s already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn’t reveal much, he did let it be known that “Rev” isn’t exactly something new. In fact, he’s been doing it for a while now.

“I’ll give it to you this way: At a later date, I’ll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I’ve done it before, I did it with ‘Yeah!’ ” he said, “taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with ‘OMG,’ once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

“It’s bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here,” he said, gesturing toward his heart, “And that’s what Rev Pop is. There’s more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that’s just what I’m going to tell you right now. ‘Rev’ is what it’s called … the movement is called Rev.”

Usher wouldn’t say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they’re going to be impressed … if not a little shocked.

“Stay alive,” he smiled, “Because you’re definitely going to be in for a surprise.”

Usher To Donate Gadhafi Money To Charity

‘I will be donating all of my personal proceeds…to various human rights organizations,’ singer says of concert linked to Libyan dictator.

R&B superstar Usher announced Friday (March 4) that he was donating to various charities proceeds from appearing at a private event at St. Barts linked to Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, according to a statement made to the Associated Press.

The Grammy award winner’s renouncement comes after similar announcements from singers Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, and Beyoncé, all of whom were revealed to have performed at private concerts linked to the Middle Eastern leader, who has faced open revolt and major political uprisings since February.

“I am sincerely troubled to learn about the circumstances surrounding the Nikki Beach St. Bart’s event that took place on New Year’s Eve 2009,” Usher said of the concert, at which he appeared alongside Beyoncé but did not perform. “I will be donating all of my personal proceeds from that event to various human rights organizations.”

Usher has already begun the process, having made a donation to Amnesty International, the AP reports. The exact size of the donation is not known.

The New Year’s Eve gig was reportedly for Moammar’s fourth son Muastassim, who an unnamed music industry source told MTV News has a history of throwing lavish parties “jammed” with supermodels.

Beyoncé, who sang at the event, donated all proceeds from her performance to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of the Haitian earthquake.

“All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year’s Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago,” the “Halo” singer’s publicist said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause.”

Singer Nelly Furtado tweeted February 28 that she plans to make similar amends.

“In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy,” she tweeted. “I am going to donate the $.”

The leader of Libya since a successful military coup in 1969, Gadhafi has reportedly lost control of much of his country as a result of widespread uprisings. The United Nations voted unanimously to refer the dictator to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain’t a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.

Forbes has released their list of Hollywood’s 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.

The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey’s earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.

“Avatar” creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.

Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The “Single Ladies” superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop’s Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.

The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.

Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Hollywood’s 20 highest-earning men and women of 2010, according to Forbes:

1. Oprah Winfrey, $315 million
2. James Cameron, $210 million
3. Tyler Perry, $125 million
4. Michael Bay, $120 million
5. Tiger Woods, $105 million
6. Jerry Bruckheimer, $100 million
7. Steven Spielberg, $100 million
8. George Lucas, $95 million
9. Beyoncé, $87 million
10. Dr. Phil, $80 million
11. Simon Cowell, $80 million
12. Jerry Seinfeld, $75 million
13. Britney Spears, $64 million
14. Lady Gaga, $62 million
15. Madonna, $58 million
16. Sandra Bullock, $56 million
17. Ellen DeGeneres, $55 million
18. Miley Cyrus, $48 million
19. Taylor Swift, $45 million
20. Judge Judy Sheindlin, $45 million

Is Beyonce Almost Finished With Her New Album?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

‘I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one,’ singer/songwriter Sia says of song she pitched for Beyonce’s new album.

As Britney Spears and Lady Gaga gear up to release new albums, there’s another pop heavyweight who may offer them some friendly competition: Beyoncé. Details surrounding the singer’s next album remain scarce, but according to a few of the project’s collaborators, Bey is almost finished recording the follow-up to 2008′s I Am … Sasha Fierce and has managed to hit the studio with an extensive list of producers.

After gushing about her high hopes for working with Beyoncé, Australian songstress Sia revealed that she told B’s behind-the-scenes team that she wanted to lend a creative hand for the new album. “So I just said to all the producers, writers, everyone, help me make this happen, and then Diplo e-mailed me and said, ‘where are you in the world right now? would you be interested in flying to New York? I’m writing with Beyoncé,’ and I was like, ‘Yesss!’ ” the singer told MTV Australia.

Despite Diplo’s offer, Sia said she was unable to fly out because of schedule conflicts, but is in the process of pitching songs to Beyoncé. When asked if her submissions were for Beyoncé’s forthcoming LP, Sia said, “Well, there’s only one song left for this album, so I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one. That’s my dream, that’s my goal.”

Sia isn’t the only collaborator that has suggested Beyoncé is close to wrapping up studio sessions for the project. Sleigh Bells have confirmed working with the singer, but are weary on whether their work with the songstress will make the final cut. Speaking with NME.com, guitarist Derek Miller admitted, “I actually have no idea if the collaboration will ever be released.”

While Miller remained tight-lipped on details regarding the song (or songs?), the Sleigh Bells bandmate confessed that the collabo is just one of her many musical partnerships, saying, “Beyoncé works with whoever she wants to work with, probably 30 or 40 producers. It’s a totally different world from what I’m used to. So for me, it’s just exciting to hear something that I worked on but I can’t really say any more than that.”

Sia and the Sleigh Bells join a long list of other collaborators who have been tapped to work on Beyoncé’s new album, including Ne-Yo, S1, Jim Jonsin, Sean “The Pen” Garrett, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

Who do you want to see Beyoncé collaborate with on her new album? Share your suggestions in the comments.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Government Hooker’ Makes Fashion-Show Debut

Lady Gaga managed to look like a seasoned pro when she hit the catwalk for Mugler’s Paris Women’s Fashion Week show, where she made her debut as a model. The singer donned two looks, one all-black and the other white, for her rousing appearance.

While her runway appearance was certainly headline-making, it was the fact that Gaga previewed part of a Born This Way song for the fashionistas that was even more noteworthy. The dance track, “Government Hooker,” was the latest song Gaga has teased fans with from her May release.

It featured a thumping beat, operatic vocals and a trance-y vibe. On it, she sings sexy lines like, “I can be anything/ I’ll be your everything/ Just touch me, baby.” The massive club track features Gaga’s full voice sharing requests like, “Put your hands on me.” On the track about desire, she sings, “I’m gonna drink my tears tonight/ I’m gonna drink my tears and cry/ ‘Cause I know you love me, baby.” During the show, she also played “Scheiße” and “Born This Way” in addition to the dark new track.

It might be the first time she graced a catwalk, but it’s not the first time she’s previewed new tracks during a fashion show. “Scheiße” was previewed during Mugler’s men’s show in January, and she previously debuted “Bad Romance” in 2009 during an Alexander McQueen show.

Gaga has called “Government Hooker” “one of my favorites” and said it “has more of a hip-hop beat.”

“We double-timed the beat. It’s a super fast, really hard record, and the lyrics are really filthy,” she added. “It’s also empowering, but more in the direction of sexual female empowerment.”

What do you think of Lady Gaga’s new music? Let us know in the comments!

Nelly And Kelly Rowland’s ‘Gone’ Video Hits The Net

Reunited artists frolic on a beach in flirty new clip for follow-up to smash ‘Dilemma.’

Nelly could have been channeling Rick James on his Teena Marie-featuring classic “Fire & Desire” when the St. Louis rapper first sets eyes on Kelly Rowland in his latest video for “Gone”: “It’s really good to see you again and I must admit you’re looking really nice these days,” James says, and Nelly seems to echo those sentiments in the brand-new clip, which leaked on Tuesday (March 8).

(Check out photos of Nelly and Kelly Rowland on the set of “Gone.”)

The pair reconnect on the Jim Jonsin-produced (and Rico Love-penned) track from Nelly’s 5.0, a reunion for the artists, who scored a hit years ago on 2002′s “Dilemma.”

In the video, Nelly and Rowland are both vacationing on an island resort, when the rapper spots the singer lounging out in the sun and is stopped in his tracks. Throughout the visual, they take turns not only crooning to each other but also pining for the other.

“I don’t want to say it’s a sequel. I don’t want to diminish anything with ‘Dilemma’ or have an expectation you can’t live up to when you do that,” Nelly told MTV News last year about “Gone.” “When you do that type of thing, there’s people who are already, ‘I don’t wanna hear it. It’s supposed to be “Dilemma.” ‘ You already being negative [before] pushing the button!

“It’s one of those things where we did reconnect,” he continued. “Our chemistry has already proven to be good, whether it was onstage or in the studio. It was something that we wanted to reconnect with. It was produced by Jim Jonsin. … It’s a cool joint. I think people will get it. It can never be ‘Dilemma,’ but we wanted to extend the story. It’s continuing the story a little bit more, seeing her again.”

Are you happy to see Nelly and Kelly together again in the “Gone” video? Tell us in the comments!

Young Buck Pleads Not Guilty To Felony Gun Charges

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Former G-Unit member faces up to 10 years if convicted.
By Jayson Rodriguez

On Monday, former 50 Cent protégé Young Buck pleaded not guilty to federal felony gun possession charges in a Nashville court.

The rapper’s home was raided in August 2010 by Internal Revenue Service agents for $300,000 in unpaid taxes. During the raid, officials alleged they discovered a .40-caliber pistol and ammunition belonging to Young Buck, according to local NBC affiliate WSMV. The indictment in the case had been sealed until Monday.

As a previously convicted felon (for stabbing a man at the Vibe Awards in 2004), he is not allowed to possess a gun and could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. The onetime G-Unit star (real name: David Brown), appeared in court before a judge in handcuffs and pleaded not-guilty. He was released on a $100,000 bond.

Young Buck has endured financial difficulties since unceremoniously parting ways with 50 Cent and Interscope Records. He filed a lawsuit in the past, claiming the parties short-changed him out of earnings. 50, however, has long maintained that he not only was fair in paying Buck, but also helped the lyricist with additional funds to pay off debts.

At the time of the raid, Buck was emphatic that he had been cheated out of funds.

“I have a new team in place, but I am also paying full attention now,” he said in a statement. “Nothing like this will ever happen again. This is a huge wake-up call for all entertainers to stay on top of your own trusted employees and team members, and replace anyone that was put in place by your record label if the situation you have goes sour. This IRS situation came about because I trusted accountants, lawyers and managers to handle my business for me while I focused on making music. From now on, I am going to stay on top of my own business.”

Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz Headed To Court In Custody Case

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Divorcing couple are engaged in battle over 2-year-old son Bronx.
By Gil Kaufman

The amicable split between Pete Wentz and soon-to-be ex-wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz appears to be taking a slightly less friendly turn. The couple, who separated earlier this year and seemed to be on good terms, appear to be headed to court to resolve a brewing custody dispute over their 2-year-old son, Bronx.

According to TMZ, Wentz filed papers on Monday in response to Simpson’s divorce petition. The former Fall Out Boy bassist asked that a judge grant joint physical and legal custody of their son and requested that each spouse pay their own legal fees. The gossip site also claimed to have obtained a copy of the divorce petition, in which lawyers for Simpson-Wentz checked a box indicating that she wanted primary physical custody of the toddler and that she wanted Wentz to pay her legal fees as well.

The Wentz form lists May 16, 2008, as the date of their marriage and February 9, 2011, as the date of their separation.

When news of the divorce broke last month, sources close to the couple said they were intent on riding out the split peacefully and putting their focus on Bronx’s well-being. “It’s very amicable. They’re on very friendly terms and speaking — it’s fine,” an insider told People magazine at the time. “They’ve just grown apart. They’ve been growing apart for quite some time.”

The source added that parenting their toddler remained their top priority. “It’s all about [2-year-old son] Bronx for them. They’re fantastic parents — Pete says she’s a great mom, and she says he’s a great father,” the insider said. “It’s about Bronx’s care and well-being and happiness for them.”

Insiders have also echoed the “growing apart” reasoning to TMZ, adding that their respective careers — Simpson has largely eschewed the spotlight since 2008′s Bittersweet World, while Wentz has dabbled in fashion and piloted other musical projects — wedged them apart.

“After Bronx was born, Ashlee made a conscious decision to get out of the business, but Pete’s heart was in music so he kept touring and that became a big issue in their relationship,” the source added.

While insiders have maintained the split is drama-free, TMZ reports that Simpson left because of Wentz’s antics. “It’s really all about Pete’s erratic behavior,” the source said. “She really wanted out.”

Charlie Sheen Plans To Sue Warner Bros. Over ‘Men’ Firing

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

‘They have no basis to suspend or terminate Charlie Sheen,’ actor’s lawyer says.
By Gil Kaufman

As you might expect, the divorce between troubled actor Charlie Sheen and the creators of “Two and a Half Men” has gotten very ugly, very quickly. Not long after Warner Bros. announced on Monday that it had fired Sheen from the show effective immediately, Sheen’s lawyer told The Hollywood Reporter that legal action is imminent.

“We will sue,” Sheen’s attorney, Marty Singer, said on Monday. “It’s a matter of when. It could be this week; it could be in a little while. We’re in no rush. But we will sue.”

After weeks of what were described as “increasingly rancorous letters” between Singer and Warner Bros., the lawyer said he was not surprised that his client’s contract was terminated.

As Sheen has claimed all along, though, Singer said Warners was in breach of its agreement with the formerly highest-paid sitcom actor on TV, despite Sheen’s recent spate of incendiary interviews and comments about the show’s runners and co-creator Chuck Lorre.

“They have no basis to suspend or terminate Charlie Sheen,” Singer said. He added that the firing came after a “blistering” letter he sent to Warners on March 2 outlining Sheen’s case against the studio.

“From January 2010, even after my client was arrested and then charged with a felony and misdemeanor charges, Warner Bros. did not suspend my client,” read the letter. “Instead it wanted my client to agree to commit to do additional seasons of ['Men']. Warner Bros. confirmed that it would continue to employ Mr. Sheen even if he pleaded guilty to a felony as long as he did not serve jail time that would interfere with the production schedule.”

That letter reportedly was the final straw, inspiring Warner Bros. to send an 11-page letter of its own (obtained by TMZ), ending its relationship with Sheen and describing him as being “engaged in dangerously self-destructive conduct and appears to be very ill.”

The company goes on to give an explanation for why Sheen was being let go. “There is ample evidence supporting Warner Bros. reasonable good faith opinion that Mr. Sheen has committed felony offenses involving moral turpitude (including but not limited to furnishing of cocaine to others as part of the self-destructive lifestyle he has described publicly) that have ‘interfere[d] with his ability to fully and completely render all material services required’ under the agreement,” reads the letter. It also mentions his trashing of a hotel room at the Plaza in New York last year, various drug binges, missed rehearsals, flubbed lines, rants against Lorre and production shutdowns due to Sheen’s trips to rehab and the firing of his sobriety coach. It also details an attempt to make a private plane available to Sheen to take him to rehab, an offer he allegedly brushed off.

“Regrettably, Mr. Sheen failed to continue with his rehabilitation program,” the letter claims. “The result has been a series of well-chronicled and increasingly erratic outbursts that have culminated with Mr. Sheen’s public tirades of the last few weeks.”

Even without his gig on the show, though, Sheen’s camp claims he will still get paid. TMZ reported that unnamed sources close to the actor said on Monday that if Sheen is replaced and “Men” continues with new episodes, the “Platoon” star will draw a paycheck. That’s because Sheen allegedly has a “Michael J. Fox” clause (referring to Fox’s “Spin City” stint) in his contract that ensures that he will keep getting paid as long as the show is in production, even if he is not on it. Ironically, Fox benefitted from that clause when he left “City” and was replaced by Sheen.

Amid all the drama, Sheen seemed to be in a celebratory mood on Monday. After reportedly taking a meeting about a potential Conan O’Brien-style stand-up tour, the actor climbed onto the roof of the Live Nation building in Beverly Hills and waved a machete as he swigged from a bottle labeled Tiger Blood and said he was “free at last!”

Beyonce May Work With Diplo, Sleigh Bells On New Album

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Producer says he was ‘in NYC tryin’ to make tracks’ for B and Bells’ songwriter/guitarist.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ WireImage

Over the years, Diplo has worked with everyone from Thom Yorke to Spank Rock (and, of course, M.I.A.) so perhaps it should come as no surprise that, for his next collaboration, he’s chosen to work with none other than Beyoncé. Oh, and electro-slammers Sleigh Bells, too. It all makes sense, in some bizarre way.

This is according to Dip himself, who posted a message — and a remix of the Sleigh Bells track “Tell ‘Em” — on his blog, in which he let it be known that he, his production partner Switch and Sleigh Bells’ songwriter/guitarist Derek Miller just wrapped sessions for Beyoncé’s follow-up to I Am … Sasha Fierce. He wasn’t quite sure what would come of the tracks they created.

“Me and Switch was in [the] studio in NYC tryin’ to make tracks with Derek and Beyoncé last week after we played her team [Sleigh Bells'] album,” Diplo wrote. “Dunno if we gonna manage to finish, but [it] was good times.”

At the very least, you know Bey’s husband, indie-rock fan Jay-Z, is pumped by the news. Diplo is just the latest in an ever-growing list of top-flight producers who have worked with Beyoncé in recent months. There’s still no release date or tentative title for her upcoming album, but she’s logged studio time with the likes of S1 (he of “Power” fame), Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin.

A spokesperson for Beyoncé did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment on the Diplo tracks by press time.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Will Be ‘A Roller-Coaster Ride,’ Creative Director Says

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

‘I’m so excited for how riveting, energetic and electric the record is, something really phenomenal,’ Laurieann Gibson says.

It’s an exciting time to be a Lady Gaga fan. This week, the pop star released her much-anticipated “Born This Way” video and walked the runway and previewed her track “Government Hooker” at a Thierry Mugler fashion show. And now there are a few more details about her next Born This Way single, “Judas,” and its video.

“We’re already getting ready to go into rehearsal [for the video]. She’s like, ‘I’m all ready to start ‘Judas’!’ She’s ready,” Gaga’s creative director Laurieann Gibson told MTV News. “And ‘Judas’ is exciting for me because we had this amazing artistic approach to ‘BTW’ and I’m so excited for how riveting, energetic and electric the record is, something really phenomenal. So, visually, the dance, the costuming, the idea of how big we’re trying to go, [it's] going to be a roller-coaster ride.

“There is [a director in mind],” Gibson continued, adding that nothing about the video will be ordinary. “What is a traditional music video? Even if we go with a traditional music video, the directors that we love are not traditional, so the idea that they get to collaborate with us means they too want to live outside of what people expect a traditional music video to be.”

As for the sound of the song, Fernando Garibay, one of the musical directors on the album, opened up about the RedOne-produced dance tune. “It’s a statement about, again I can’t speak for her, but what I gather is it’s about sometimes not choosing the right choice,” he explained. “But you can’t deny that the choice is not a part of you and who you are.

” ‘Judas’ is a dance song, definitely,” he continued. “I think ‘Judas’ is in the traditional RedOne/Gaga vein. It’s great because it’s a serious message, it’s a little playful, but still serious, but still somehow you wind up dancing to it. That’s what’s great about her music. You know, like, my favorite song of all time, dance song, ‘Billie Jean,’ is a story you wouldn’t think of singing, but then you wind up dancing and singing the lyrics. I think that’s the Holy Grail of music for me, which is dance.”

Gaga shared lyrics from “Judas” last month, and Gaga’s pal and stylist Nicola Formichetti reposted those lyrics on Twitter late Thursday. “I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, Baby,” he wrote, adding, “JUDAS FASHION. so excited i can’t sleep!”

‘American Idol’ Finalist Pia Toscano Plots Her Strategy

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

It’s easy to think big when you’re the underdog. And that’s definitely the position New Jersey “American Idol” auditioner Pia Toscano is coming from. After wowing America last week and earning a spot in the finals, Toscano spoke to MTV News at Thursday night’s post-elimination bash about her plans for putting together a successful run on the show.

“I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back,” she said of her plan to stick to the strategy that got her where she is now. “But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well.”

After flying mostly under the radar so far this season, the raven-haired singer made headlines Wednesday when she performed a stunning cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” which stole the thunder of the rest of the female competitors that night and locked in her place in the top 13.

Toscano, 21, was stunned by the reaction from the audience and the judges following her performance. Holding her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing ovation she had just received, she seemed floored when he told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show’s history. “That was unbelievable,” Jackson told her. “That’s how you do it!”

Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his nonsensical Tyler-isms (“You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF” — WTF??), agreed with Jackson’s assertion that she was “unbelievable,” adding as well that it was “gorgeous.” Jennifer Lopez kicked the praise up a notch, calling the performance “out of this world.” “You were saving that for when it counts!” she teased Toscano.

Talk about saving your best for last. Toscano said that after not getting much screen time during the early rounds of the show, she was glad that she peaked before the final cut-down. “I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I’m so happy that I did save it for when it counted,” she said. “I’ve grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I’m so happy that that was my moment to shine.”

Toscano will have to prove that she’s more than a one-trick pony Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week.

Can Pia Toscano win “American Idol”? Sound off below!

Scotty McCreery Says Josh Turner Is ‘Proud’ Of His ‘American Idol’ Run

For anyone who has been following the last month or so of “American Idol,” which has narrowed the contestant field from tens of thousands to 24 semifinalists, the journey of North Carolina country crooner Scotty McCreery has, in large part, been due to his repeat performance of Josh Turner’s “Your Man.”

When MTV news caught up with the deep-voiced high school junior at the afterparty celebrating this year’s “Idol” top 13 on Thursday, we asked him if, given the resurgence of interest in Turner’s 2005 hit single, he’s met or heard from the Nashville star yet.

“I actually met him the day I auditioned for the show at a meet-and-greet,” McCreery revealed. “He sent me a message today, and he just told me he was rooting for me and that he was proud of me. So that meant a lot to me.”

With regard to what McCreery plans to sing during the 10th season of the reality singing competition, the 17-year-old hinted at a few big country names and accepted our suggestion that he take on fellow deep-voiced singer Trace Adkins.

“Trace is the man! I saw him in concert this summer,” McCreery said, admitting his admiration for Adkins but no plans to sing any of his tunes. “Maybe some Tim McGraw, some Garth Brooks,” he teased. “[I'll] change it up a little bit.”

McCreery went on to say that while he wants to focus on his strengths in country music, he also wants to keep America guessing.

“I want to stay true to myself and sing country,” he said, “But I’ll switch it up here and there, give America something different. We’ll see where that goes.”

Usher was forced to delay the kick off of his European OMG Tour on Wednesday night in Berlin because of illness. In a statement released to fans, the singer apologized for the last-minute scratch, saying he felt he was suffering from a “sinus complication.” Although the gig was rescheduled for Thursday night at the O2 World arena in Berlin, his German fans apparently weren’t appeased by his effort.

“I am truly sorry to all my fans in Berlin who were inconvenienced by tonight’s postponement of the show,” the singer said in a statement about Wednesday’s aborted concert. “I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give them the show that they properly deserve. … I am looking forward to performing tomorrow and giving Berliners a great show.”

According to the statement, the singer received treatment from doctors for a sinus issue that affected his balance, but a visibly still-ailing Usher was unable to finish the Thursday make-up show, reportedly abandoning the stage after just five songs.

On Friday (January 14), a follow-up statement from his spokesperson confirmed that he was too ill to play Thursday night’s Berlin date and has been forced to reschedule the next three dates on the tour as well. The Rotterdam show originally scheduled for this week has been moved to March 1 and a show in Antwerp, also slated for this week, has been bumped to March 7.

The statement also updated the singer’s condition: “Usher is suffering from upper respiratory illness, which is currently preventing him from performing a proper show. After consultation with doctors, he has been advised to reschedule the upcoming dates in order to get the rest he needs to ensure a complete recovery.”

Footage posted on YouTube that was purportedly taken at the make-up performance in Berlin shows Usher standing silently at the microphone seemingly unable to sing, with fans booing him at first and then chanting, “Usher, Usher,” as he approaches the microphone and apologizes to them for his struggles. “I appreciate your support,” he told the fans wearily.

“I have been very excited about my European Tour and I deeply regret having to reschedule the shows,” the singer said in the new statement. “I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused my fans. My fans are the best in the world and I am looking forward to getting better so that I can give them the show they deserve.”

Usher wrapped up the North American leg of his tour in December and his overseas dates are slated to last through the spring.

What do you think of the fans’ reaction to Usher’s walking offstage mid-show? Tell us in the comments.

Robert Downey Jr. Talks Jon Favreau’s Departure From ‘Iron Man 3′

Downey says shooting the next ‘Iron Man’ installment without the director will be ‘weird.’

After director Jon Favreau departed the “Iron Man” franchise but before Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) became the front-runner to helm the third installment of the superhero-movie series, MTV News sat down with Robert Downey Jr. and asked the actor how it would feel to play Tony Stark without Favreau behind the camera.

“It is weird. I think there’s always a closure to everything,” he said, adding, “This will all come to an end one day, and I think the thing is to just really enjoy it while you have it.”

No bad blood exists between the two men and, as Downey told us, he remains friendly with Favreau and is looking forward to his next directorial effort. “He’s up to great stuff with ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ coming up,” the actor said. “I just spoke with him a few weeks ago and we were quite friendly.”

Before Downey begins “Iron Man 3,” which isn’t due in theaters until May 2013, he’ll be joining the highly anticipated superhero all-star flick, “The Avengers.” The picture will bring Downey’s metal-suited Stark together with the likes of Chris Evans’ Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. “The Avengers” will begin filming later this year, after Downey finishes work on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which he was shooting when we caught up with him in January. Ever the jokester, Downey said he won’t have to do much preparation to make “Avengers” a winner.

“You grow a moustache and maybe do something with the hair. That’s how easy it is,” he laughed. “It’s going to be great, once I tell them what to do.”

Miley Cyrus Rocks ‘Saturday Night Live’

Superstar teen lampoons Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber and herself on sketch comedy show.

For fans of Miley Cyrus last night’s “Saturday Night Live” had to seem, like, “pretty cool,” as the 18-year-old former Disney Channel Star made her first ever appearance as host on the long running sketch comedy show, alongside musical guest The Strokes.

From the very beginning, Cyrus made it clear she was not above lampooning herself, self-depreciatingly telling viewers during her monologue that “Hannah Montana” was The Disney Channel’s version of “Black Swan,” before transitioning into “I’m Sorry I’m Not Perfect,” a song which managed to walk the fine line of referencing nearly every scandal of the young performer’s still burgeoning career without actually apologizing for any of them.

“There’s a photo of me dressed like a dude, and Annie Leibovitz tried to get me nude. For those of you who think that’s pretty crude, I’m sorry I’m not perfect,” Cyrus belted.

“[I] didn’t make a dirty tape, and pass it along. Didn’t text a dirty picture of [my] dong,” she continued, flanked by cast members Bobby Moynihan and Kristen Wiig. “Don’t’ both of these things seem worse than a bong? I’m sorry I’m not perfect.”

The show’s midnight centerpiece was, predictably, “The Miley Cyrus Show,” which continued SNL’s recent tradition of having the target of their hijinks appear alongside the actor lampooning them. In this case, Vanessa Bayer, whose spot-on impersonation of the giggly, hyper-loquacious Cyrus has become a show highlight, made room on her mock talk show for Cyrus herself, who in her best impression of the night played Justin Bieber.

“Did you know I smoked salvia,” Bayer as Cyrus said to her guest.

“Well there’s no reason that you wouldn’t,” Cyrus as Bieber replied, looking straight into the camera. “Because it’s totally legal, yo!”

The spot offered up further opportunity for Cyrus to be in on the joke, dancing alongside a super sycophantic caricature of her father played by Jason Sudeikis, and laughing as Bayer introduced a 3D film called “Always Say Always” to compete with Bieber’s “Never Say Never.”

But while she took turns playing Bieber, Lindsay Lohan and Fergie among others, the most daring sketch of the night might have been the one where Cyrus played herself, in a bite the hand that fed you skit called “Disney Channel Acting School.”

Alongside Kenan Thompson as Raven Symone, Cyrus offered tips for kids looking to break into the big time with a show on the young adult channel including, “On the Disney Channel, every person has to be the loudest person in the room,” and, “In the Disney Channel world, any child is smarter than every adult.” Cyrus also showed off some classic moves like “Reacting to Stinky Feet” and “Spying in a Doorway.”

What did you think of Cyrus’s performance on Saturday Night Live? Which skit was the funniest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Celebrate Wendy O. Williams’ Birthday With Bobblehead Doll

Monday, March 7th, 2011

What better way to celebrate Wendy O. Williams’ 61st birthday on May 28 (if she hadn’t blown her head off at age 48) than with a cute, scantily clad bobblehead doll.

Lady Gaga Talks Paris Fashion Week Appearance, ‘Born This Way’

Monday, March 7th, 2011

The singer said the philosophy behind the fashion show she modeled at was about being ‘really free and really free-minded.’

Lady Gaga took a break from taking over the airwaves with her new single “Born This Way” to hit the catwalk at Paris fashion week and take a turn as a runway model for her fashion buddy Nicola Formichetti. She wore his clothes at the Thierry Mugler Autumn/Winter 2011 show on Wednesday, and like any Gaga-related production, theatricality and fashionability were in the air.

CNN caught up with the pop star and the fashion designer in Paris to talk about their relationship and the inclusion of Gaga’s music in the show. Formichetti had asked Gaga to be the musical director for their runway performance, and insisted that “Born This Way” close the event.

“[I thought that] for a fashion show, maybe he wants something a bit more underground, one of the more avant-garde records from the album, but he really wanted me to use ['Born This Way'],” Lady Gaga said in the interview. “He said it represented female empowerment and that’s what the song is all about, and I think that’s what Nicola is all about, and I’m just really proud to be here.”

When asked whether they were ever nervous about the reception of their respective works, Gaga and Formichetti said “no.” Their show was, in Gaga’s words, all about being “really subjective and really free and really free-minded” and “being proud to be a woman” instead of giving in to the “competition and race” that she felt criticism through the Internet has created.

“Scrutiny is like this massive thing now in this century. For Nicola and I and for everyone that we work with, it’s all about your peers, it’s about people that you respect. It’s about knowing your own strength artistically,” the singer explained. “I think if you ever backtrack or if you ever show a sign of insecurity, it shows sort of a weakness in the idea. Stop analyzing everything so much. Analysis ultimately, I think, leads to divisiveness.”

When asked to comment on John Galliano, the British fashion designer who was the head designer for Christian Dior until he recently was fired for making anti-Semitic comments, Lady Gaga declined. “Let’s skip that question. Let’s keep it positive!” she said.
